Additional external validation of RLNC from Nomor Research

Additional external validation of RLNC from Nomor Research GmbH , in collaboration with Nokia Bell Labs and supported by the European Commission under the 5G-Xcast 5GPPP Project. This second paper showcases the efficiency and flexibility of Random Linear Network Coding (RLNC), especially in 5G Broadcast / Multicast use cases.

Nomor propose a method of coordinating physical layer coding with Application Layer or Layer 2 Error Correction in the RAN (using RLNC for the higher layers) to improve spectral efficiency, while maintaining #QoE and #reliability, with great results. Since their previous white paper (Layer 2 FEC in 5G Broadcast / Multicast Networks) highlighted performance advantages of using RLNC over Raptor codes as specified in LTE, Nomor elected to only use RLNC in this 5G simulation.
